Abstract
This study aims to describe structural relationship among individual and environmental characteristics which determine drinking behavior and alcohol problems of employees. The data was derived from a sample of 3,121 employees working for 104 workplaces with more than 300 employed in City of Seoul. A sample of 1,527 employees at 51 workplaces was selected from the raw data for this study. Data for alcohol-related organizational environment was collected from managers at workplaces selected. From employees at the workplaces were collected for data of individual characteristics including drinking patterns and problems. Multi-level Structural Equation Model was employed by using Mplus 5.20.
Data revealed that drinking behavior of employees is determined not only by individual characteristics such as sex, drinking norms, decisional balance for drinking, job stress, also by the organizational and environmental characteristics such as alcohol availability during working hours, the gender ratio at workplace, the rate of drinking subculture. The organizational environmental factors were stronger than individual ones in explaining variability of dependent variables. Policy implications were discussed in reducing and preventing alcohol problems at workplaces.
